Microinverter vs String Inverter Calculator
What this calculator does
The tool compares lifetime economics of two inverter architectures on an Australian residential PV system:
- String inverter — one central CEC-approved inverter (Fronius Primo, Sungrow SG, SolarEdge HD-Wave, SMA Sunny Boy, GoodWe DNS, Huawei SUN2000) handles all panels wired in a DC string.
- Microinverter — a small CEC-approved unit (Enphase IQ8M, IQ8P, APsystems DS3-L, Hoymiles HMS-2000) sits behind every panel.
It outputs total installed cost in each configuration, annual yield after shading losses, annual revenue at your retail tariff, the premium for going microinverter, annual revenue delta, simple payback in years, and 25-year net benefit. Under 6% shading the string inverter usually wins; over 10% the microinverter usually wins, often by several thousand dollars over 25 years.
How the math works
yield_string = annual_yield × (1 − shading_pct × 1.3 / 100)
yield_micro = annual_yield × (1 − shading_pct × 1.0 / 100)
cost_string = system_kW × cost_per_kW_string_bos + central_inverter_cost
cost_micro = n_panels × cost_per_micro + bos_per_kW_micro × system_kW
rev_string = system_kW × yield_string × tariff
rev_micro = system_kW × yield_micro × tariff
premium = cost_micro − cost_string
delta_rev = rev_micro − rev_string
payback = premium / delta_rev
net_25y = delta_rev × 25 − premium
The 1.3× shading multiplier on the string config matches the CEC Design Guidelines 2024 inter-row and module-shading penalty for unoptimized strings.
Microinverter advantages
Per-panel MPPT. Each panel runs its own MPPT — shaded or mismatched modules do not drag the rest of the array. SunWiz’s 2024 Australian PV Performance Index documented a 4–7% energy-harvest advantage for Enphase systems on shaded Sydney and Melbourne roofs versus matched string-inverter systems.
Heat tolerance. Enphase IQ8M rated to 65°C ambient versus 40–50°C string-inverter wall-mount derating in unshaded garage installs in WA, NT, and inland QLD. Real-world output gap reaches 3–5% in summer.
25-year warranty matches Tier-1 panel warranties (REC Alpha Pure-R, Trina Vertex S+, LONGi Hi-MO 6 N-type, Jinko Tiger Neo). Most string inverters carry 5–10 years standard, extendable.
Module-level monitoring via Enphase Enlighten or APsystems EMA detects per-panel underperformance — useful for cyclone-damage insurance claims and STC validation audits.
AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 compliance — all CEC-approved microinverters meet Region A/B/C frequency droop and volt-var profiles. No add-on hardware required.
No single point of failure — a dead micro loses one panel of generation. A failed string inverter takes the whole array offline; high-DRH (demand response hour) days you lose all production.
String inverter advantages
Lower upfront cost. A 6.6 kW Fronius Primo or Sungrow SG residential install runs A$6,400–A$8,200 fully installed after STC rebate (SunWiz Q1 2026 + Solar Choice 2026 benchmarks). Enphase IQ8 runs A$8,800–A$11,200.
Single point of replacement. Fronius Primo or Sungrow SG out-of-warranty swap is A$1,200–A$1,800. Replacing 17 microinverters individually after warranty would cost A$3,500–A$5,000 due to roof-access scaffolding.
Mature AU service ecosystem. Fronius (Austria), Sungrow (China), SMA (Germany), and SolarEdge (Israel) have all maintained AU subsidiaries since 2014; CEC-accredited installer service is universally available.
Sungrow + BYD popularity. Sungrow SH RS hybrid + BYD HVS/HVM is the dominant 2026 AU hybrid topology, with strong VPP compatibility (Amber Electric, Origin Loop, Tesla Energy Plan).
Tigo TS4-A-2F retrofit. If shade develops post-install (new build next door, growing eucalyptus), Tigo optimizers can be added on affected panels for A$110–A$140/panel.
2026 cost comparison in AUD
SunWiz Q1 2026, Solar Choice Best Solar Quotes 2026, and CEC accredited-installer benchmarks for a 6.6 kW Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne install:

Fully-installed market benchmarks Q1 2026 (post-STC rebate):
- Enphase IQ8M + Trina Vertex S+: A$10,800
- Fronius Primo + Trina Vertex S+: A$8,400
- Sungrow SG + JA Solar DeepBlue: A$7,900
- GoodWe DNS + Tindo Karra (Australian-made): A$8,800
STC rebate at 33 zones for 6.6 kW Sydney: ~A$2,800–A$3,200 in 2026.
When to choose which
Choose microinverters when:
- Shading exceeds 8% on any roof face (chimney, dormer, neighbouring property, Norfolk pine) — quantify via the shading calculator
- Roof has multiple orientations (E + W common on hip-roofed Sydney terraces)
- You plan to expand within 5 years
- The system is in cyclone Region C/D (Cairns, Townsville, Karratha, Broome) — Enphase + REC Alpha Pure-R is the documented standard
- Garage/under-eave string-inverter location is sun-exposed and routinely exceeds 50°C ambient
Choose string inverter when:
- One clean north-facing roof plane (typical NSW/QLD/VIC newer estates), under 6% shading
- Budget is binding — STC rebate is identical between architectures
- You want Sungrow SH RS + BYD HVM hybrid topology for VPP optimisation
- Local installer base favours Fronius, Sungrow, or SMA service
AU regulatory and tariff context
AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 — both architectures are on the CEC Approved Inverters list. Region A/B/C profiles apply by state (NSW/VIC/SA Region A, QLD Region B, WA Region C in places).
DNSP connection — Ausgrid, Endeavour, Essential, AusNet, Powercor, Citipower, Energex, Ergon, SA Power Networks, Western Power, TasNetworks all accept both. Most cap export at 5 kW single-phase residential (Endeavour 5 kW, Energex 5 kW, SA Power Networks Flexible Exports trial 1.5–10 kW dynamic).
STC certificate value — identical between architectures, calculated on system size and deeming period (33 zones in 2026 dropping to 8 by 2031).
Feed-in tariffs 2026 — vary 4.0–10.0c/kWh by retailer (AGL Solar Savers 7.0c, Origin Solar Boost 8.0c, Powershop, Energy Locals, Amber Wholesale dynamic). Retail rates 28–38c/kWh. Self-consumption value (retail rate – FiT) is therefore 20–30c/kWh — making self-consumption maximisation more important than inverter architecture.
Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (July 2025) — 30% rebate on battery hardware, architecture-agnostic. Most CEC designers recommend AC-coupled storage for flexibility.
Wind loads — AS/NZS 1170.2 cyclone-region C/D engineering applies to roof mounts. Both architectures meet IP65 and cyclonic mount approval, but micro installs in Region C/D need engineered roof attachments (~A$200–A$400/system).
How to use the calculator
- System size in kW (panel count × panel watts / 1000).
- Annual yield in kWh/kWp — CEC Design Guidelines 2024 default 1,550 kWh/kWp for Sydney; 1,650 Brisbane; 1,800 Darwin; 1,500 Melbourne; 1,750 Perth; 1,650 Adelaide. Refine via the solar irradiance calculator.
- Retail tariff in A$/kWh — use the marginal flat or time-of-use rate (not the controlled-load rate).
- Set shading honestly — Solar Analytics field data has 4-8% as a common Sydney residential shading number.
- Microinverter cost: Enphase IQ8M installed allocation A$240–A$280 in 2026.
- String inverter cost: Fronius Primo 6.0 wholesale A$1,800–A$2,400 fully installed allocation A$2,200; Sungrow SG A$1,400–A$1,800.
- Read the recommendation. Pair with the solar inverter size calculator and the solar panel shading calculator for DC sizing.
Common mistakes
- Mixing CEC and non-CEC inverters — only CEC-approved inverters qualify for STC. Always check the model number against the current CEC list before quoting.
- Ignoring summer thermal derating of garage-mounted string inverters in Perth, Darwin, Adelaide — can cost 2–4% annual yield not captured in PVWatts.
- Forgetting cyclone Region C/D engineering — adds A$200–A$400/system but is mandatory for compliance.
- Comparing string-without-optimizers to micro — if the roof has any shade, price Tigo optimizers (A$120–A$150/panel) into the string quote or accept the shade-loss penalty in the yield input.
